Lead by violinist Lucy Cantley and complimented by the sultry vocals of Camille Rae, Calamity Jane is more than just a duo. According to Cantley, it is a “collaborative group project featuring various artists.” Together, they redefine genre and the components of a modern performing artist.
Cantley, founder of Calamity Jane, began playing classical viola at age 6. Her greatest musical accomplishments include touring Europe with the Princeton Orchestra as a featured solo artist, studying with renowned teachers from the Juilliard and Cincinnati Conservatories, and sharing the stage with the acclaimed artists Sarah Chang and Joshua Bell.
Rae, originally from Mt. Vernon, KY, has a long graced her audiences with her dynamic vocal range. She moved to Nashville in 2012 and quickly made a splash. Most notably, her song I Need Me hit #26 on Music Row Charts and her music videos have been featured on CMT. Rae continues to tour both nationally and internationally.
In a previous band, Cantley and Rae won the renowned NashNext 2018 competition lead by Big Machine Label Group and Nash FM. Approached with a label offer shortly after the fact, they chose to turn it down in pursuit of a more independent career.
Calamity Jane’s first single, a cover of Devil Went Down to Georgia, encountered great success, including a “thumbs up” from Charlie Daniels himself. It charted at 64 on Music Row charts, and was picked up on the top three national Country stations in Australia, as well as hundreds more. The music video for Devil Went Down to Georgia was played on CMT in the States, premiered on CMC Australia, and was also featured in various prestigious blogs and magazines.
Cantley and Rae’s further accomplishments include opening for Maddie & Tae, Travis Denning, Easton Corbin, Joe Diffie, Keith Anderson, and more.
Like it’s namesake, Calamity Jane shows incredible promise to challenge the status quo, and perhaps make a mark in history.
